Jumping On Board: Quitting My Job For A Better Life

“Risks may make you win, or they will make you learn. Either of the benefits is worth daring for.”
Israelmore Ayivor, Become a Better You

Accomplishments

These past three weeks has been a challenge! I coded, designed, and uploaded my website by myself. Created five book covers (unpaid for my portfolio), 3 posters, 3 character artworks (unpaid for my portfolio), created my logo and banners for Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Pateron, made a list of 400 topics and books I want to talk about for the next year, made a list of 150 Authors I hope to contact for paid graphic design work. I am starting to write for my graphic novel and I Just graduated with my graphic design degree six months ago and I just finished my last college class! I feel really accomplished!

I am also a cancer survivor. When I was nine months old, I had to get surgery for my right eye because I had retinoblastoma. Now I have one eye and I am grateful. It is one of the most unique things about me and it is fun to take out to scare people. The picture above with my eye means a lot to me. I took it with an old photography camera. I will make a video about it this week.

Rocky Beginnings

I forgot to introduce myself! I am Imani Danzy. Luna Ren was my pen name for my future graphic novel. I quit my full time job April 20th, 2018 because I want to pursue building Luna Ren Studio, my graphic design studio, and time to regain my health. This past year I have been losing weight because I was balancing a full time job with three college classes for six months straight.  My work was 25 miles from my college. I would work in the morning, then I would drive 1 hour straight in traffic to classes back to back. I had no time to properly take care of my health, but I risked it because it was my last full semester to get my degree. This risk created an under-eating habit. I was already skinny to begin with. I went from 125 to 105 in six months time.

I don’t regret what I did. It had to happen. I had to quit my job because I had no passion for the job and I need time to regain my health. Honestly, the job was a dead end.  I felt that my skills were being wasted on menial tasks when I could be designing instead. Also the job didn’t pay a living wage. If I wanted to move out and get married, I couldn’t.

Business and Life Lessons

I am grateful that I learned a lot of business lessons from some personal projects and from my full-time job: give warnings if they don’t pay on time, don’t be afraid to terminate a client relationship if they don’t stick to morale, make sure to follow up, make sure to get a deposit, don’t be afraid to charge for obsessive revisions, and much more.

I learned personal life lessons. I need to work freelance, I love learning and I need to wear many hats. I learned I love the process of writing a blog, making YouTube videos and making a book cover. These are my passions and if I hadn’t quit my job I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing right now.

“I know that I have much more to learn on this journey. With each mistake I can only learn more!”

Keep Moving Forward!

Now I am happy and feel excited for my future. Right now I am a business accountability partner with my partner in crime; Emily Elaine, she is a talented Author. She is also pushing me on my journey of becoming a Graphic Novelist. I made this wonderful book cover for her:

I just hope to help others through writing and/or designing for them. I long to write freelance blog posts for films blogs, create book cover designs and character art for authors, make youtube videos and meet great people along the way.  I just want to help others and if in return I feel accomplished in helping others and hopefully regain my healthy eating habits again, I would be blessed.

Please share with me any lessons you have learned from work, running your business, or life. Contact me, Imani,  if you need any book cover, character art or poster design: luna@lunarenstudio.com!  Thank You!
